A fascinating
document. Quite a long time
ago, we were engaged by a translation bureau to word process a tender document. This was
produced page for page in English, French and German. The document was a specification
for landing of a research station in a geographical area of the world which is icebound for
most of the year. It stipulated what was required -- down to the last nut, bolt, screw and
bobsled -- including heating systems, transport systems, survival systems, emergency
communication systems -- even chess pieces, playing cards and films for the entertainment of
station staff. It also detailed the time slot during the year when the equipment would have
to be landed in terms of accessibility in freezing and thawing weather. On the one hand,
intensely boring (as specifications can be). Yet with imagination one could envisage the
coming into being of something which was not there before.
